I had been trying to lose weight solely by exercising, but I was losing my battle, not the pounds. Effects of Climate Change

Climate change is defined as the change in weather patterns in a region’s overall weather patterns (e.g. precipitation, extreme weather, cloud cover, etc.) caused by increased emissions of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. There are many indications that the influx of this trapped gas is increasing and that humans are the cause of this increase. In fact, the atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide is now much higher than in the last 650 000 years. It has grown faster in the last ten years since the beginning of continuous measurements around 1960 (Green staff facts, 2012).

According to several climatologists and scientists, the effects of climate change pose hazard and threat to any life form on Earth. As the climate change occurs, effects like the following are being felt in different parts of the world:

Health effects. Increased temperatures kill many people due to heat waves, and diseases brought by animals like mosquitoes (which are affected by the change in the weather patterns), and allergy attacks as the pollen season grows longer. In the year 2003, for example, an extreme heat wave in Europe caused by an increase in temperature to nearly 20˚C above normal led to the deaths of approximately 21,000 to 35,000 people in five countries. Other health effects include malnutrition, spread of infectious diseases, diarrheal diseases, and many more.

Increased water surface temperature. Warmer temperatures have also affected sea-surface temperatures, killing about 25 percent of the world’s coral reef in the last few decades. Not only that, climate change has also caused warmer lake temperatures, therefore increasing algal blooms, increasing stratification in lakes, favoring invasive species, and lowering lake levels.

Ice cover melting. The Artic Sea and glaciers and permafrost are slowly melting due to warmer temperatures. Today, the thickness of ice during summers is only half of what it was in the 1950s.

Rising of sea levels. Because of the continuous melting of ice glaciers and permafrost, and even of the Arctic Ocean, the sea level has risen to about 6 inches during the 20th century. Scientists say that this activity could worsen to as much as 23 inches in the 21st century, which is a big threat to wetlands, coastal communities, and to our aquatic resources.

Heavier rainfall. The drastic change in climate, and in temperature, has led to more intensive rainfall in many regions of the world. Heavier rainfall is dramatically devastating some areas because it also causes floods, flashfloods, and landslides, as well as more intense typhoons and storms, destroying billions of properties and killing thousands of people from all over the world.

Extreme drought resulting to decreased crops production.  Increased temperatures have caused higher levels of evaporation and drought in many parts of the world. Because of this, agricultural lands are affected therefore withering crops and causing the decline of crops productivity all over the world. This means that world food supply would also be affected that could lead to a lot of other social implications.

Change in the ecosystems. Warmer temperatures have also caused the ecosystems to change. For instance, as temperature increases, species’ habitat are affected causing them to move to a cooler one or worse, die. Furthermore, the levels of carbon dioxide dissolved into the oceans are also increasing, making seawater more acidic thus bringing negative impacts on coral reefs and other marine life.

With all these climate change effects, and among others, it is the humans who are responsible, and will be greatly affected in return. As we are being exposed to climate change through changing weather patterns, and indirectly through changes in water supply, air and food quality, and changes in agriculture, ecosystems, industry, and settlements, our life as a whole will be significantly affected added with other turmoil in politics, economy, tourism, foreign and domestic affairs, and many others all brought by this dramatic climate change problem. In other words, if we do not act with this phenomenon, a miserable life on Earth will be experienced by the present-day generation, and the generations to come.


How to Stop Global Warming

Global warming, which is also known as the greenhouse effect, has been here long before you or anyone else out there existed. Global warming definitely means increase in temperature near the Earth’s surface, and through thousands of years, the Earth’s temperature has indeed increased, and thus the effects of global warming. When the effects of global warming lead to greater warming around the surface, the result is of course negative and horrifying. That is why, it is imperative that we act now to stop global warming so that we can live comfortably and happily as what everybody aspires for. Mentioned below are the means by which we can fight against global warming problem:

Reuse and recycle. There is for sure a lot of stuff in your house or office that you can reuse and recycle such as papers, plastic bags and the like. By doing this, you can reduce the cutting of trees for papers and minimize wastes that help in causing environmental problems like global warming.

Use compact fluorescent bulbs. By using fluorescent bulbs, not only will we save money because they have much longer life than standard bulbs base, we will also save power and may take a portion of the emission of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

Take a walk or commute. By taking a walk or commuting instead of driving your own vehicle whenever you go somewhere (e.g. school, work, market), you can help reduce the emission of carbon dioxide that triggers global warming. Minimize your air travel. Air travelling helps in emitting large amounts carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, so if you reduce your travel by even one or two trips a year, you can already help reduce carbon dioxide emission significantly.

Plant trees. Trees growing around you help reduce the problem of global warming by releasing greenhouse gases to save lives in the atmosphere. Of course, planting trees is one thing, but we also to take care of them for them to grow.

Use environment friendly gadgets. The use of environment friendly gadgets like cellphone, computers, music players and the like is another way to help stop global warming. These gadgets do not use toxic chemicals such as lead, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and mercury making them harm-free to the environment.

Use a clothesline and minimize hot water. You do not need to use energy-hogging dryers when you do your laundry. Instead, use a clothesline whenever possible. By air drying your clothes, you will be able to save up to 700 pounds of carbon dioxide for six months. You can also help save up to 500 pounds of carbon dioxide annually if you wash your clothes with cold or warm water instead of using hot water.

Conserve water and energy. Though this maybe a very basic thing, conserving water and energy is still difficult for many people. Aside from the benefit of saving money, you can also help stop the global warming by doing this. So from now on, start to practice a fast shower, keep you’re your car in the garage so you don’t have wash it often, plant drought tolerant plants for gardening, and unplug appliances when not in use.

The global warming problem is a very big threat to each life on earth. If we still care for our mother Earth, it’s high time to make a move. Climate change is the long-term shift in weather patterns caused by increase of greenhouse gases on the planet. Greenhouse gases denote to gases that contribute to the greenhouse effect by absorbing heat or infrared radiation. Greenhouse effect, moreover, is the process wherein greenhouse gases in the atmosphere accumulate and re-emit heat that is radiated from the earth, therefore trapping warmth. Climate change is often confused with global warming. Current levels of carbon dioxide which is the main greenhouse gas is approximately 440 parts per million (ppm) – the highest in the earth’s history so far (since it is continuously rising at 2-3 ppm every year). This is far from the carbon dioxide levels before the Industrial Revolution which is around 280 ppm.

While many believe that the reasons for climate change are man-made activities such as industrialization, others also claim that climate change is actually caused by natural occurrences. However, the earth’s average surface temperature has irregularly increased to 0.4˚C since 1970s which cannot be explained by natural causes. Only an increase in greenhouse gases can explain the abnormal increases and not the certain changes in the sun’s activity, volcanic eruptions, and other natural events. Other human activities that contribute to this phenomenon include burning of fossil fuels, deforestation, changes in wetland construction, and among others.

Aside from increased surface temperatures and other changes mentioned above, several scientists have revealed that climate change could also result to rises in sea levels, retreat of glaciers and melting of sea ice, more intensified weather events such as heat waves, hurricanes, tornadoes, and storms, species endangerment and extinction, loss of biodiversity, drop in agricultural yields, spread of vector-borne disease, and acidification of oceans that could drop fish yield and cause death of corals. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) report in December 2003, climate change is killing an average of 150, 000 people every year.

Efforts are being made by the people from all over the world to stop climate change. In particular, countries under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change have a goal of reducing 2˚C of the earth’s surface temperature by 2035. Important in achieving this goal is the energy and business sector which are seen as two of the highest contributors in greenhouse gases emission.  It is also essential that countries of the world develop and improve their energy policies so they could effectively address climate change.

For us people, who are the grassroots of all the causes for climate change, it is important that we start to change our behavior towards mother Earth. Several solutions to this problem have been formulated already, and our job now is to learn and practice them for good, and for the betterment of our current condition.
